The ULPower Aero Engine range use a 63V 68000 µF 'coke can' sized capacitor to protect the ECU and the rectifier regulator during operation. The installation manual suggests fitting the capacitor directly across the battery, which works brilliantly and is acceptable in many countries. However, should you wish to fit a dual battery solution or be in an area where direct connection across the battery is not permitted for single battery installations, we have a solution.
Developed with a team of aerospace and electronic engineers, where simplicity and robustness were key to solving the issue, the Metal Seagulls Soft Ramp has undergone more than 300 hours of bench testing - including extreme failure modes - and proven to be efficient, light and reliable.
Without the capacitor permanently across the battery, the capacitor will discharge between flights - and become disconnected during 'battery changeover' in a dual battery installation, or be set to 'no battery' if so desired. At all times the capacitor must be in the circuit to protect your installation.
When charging the capacitor from 'empty' there is a momentary current surge as the capacitor loads. Such surges, over time, may lead to damage to electrical and electronic components (see oscilloscope 'NONE' image). The Soft ramp allows the capacitor to charge over a few seconds (as shown in the 'curved oscilloscope image), with NO limit to operations as the full voltage is available to the airframe instantly. (images show the soft load on the oscilloscope v the surge without0
The installation package is self contained and mounted on an engraved aluminium base for ease of installation. Simply mount on the positive line from the capacitor to the engine power bus, and the negative from the capacitor to airframe ground (ideally close to the battery(ies) airframe ground).
