Put a SOCHK in it they said. A WHAT? A Metal Seagulls Swifter Oil Check Hatch Kit.... designed to fit in to both aluminium and composite cowls, this CNC cut kit is made to make your life easier!
This aluminium access hatch kit is just what you need for a wide range of solutions.
For THIN cowls / cowls where cutting a hole may need a doubler, you can use the template to position the cut-out, and use the template as a doubler! It has pre-positioned holes for rivets and rivets too, if needed.
The piano hinge comes with a shim in case you need one and also with rivets to fix the hinge in place.
If you don't need a doubler, just use the template to work out where your hole is going to be cut, drill the position for the latch and carry on...
We do not provide the 'latch' as some clients prefer Dzus, other butterfly latches, some use a Tinnerman washer and screw - and all are valid.... but we want you to have your SOCHK held on the way you like it!
Consider carefully location and orientation - the door should be hinged so that airflow does not damage it, and must be located to avoid clashes with fuel lines, oil lines, electrical systems, etc.
1. Position template and mark the 'cut away area'. Also mark the 'latch hole' and drill to 3.2mm.
2. Cut away and clean the edges - remember to radius to prevent cracks!
Fix piano hinge to door and then fix the door to the latch hole with a copper cleco or a small bolt
4. If doubler is needed, position doubler and catch with the same copper cleco or small bolt
5. Fix the piano hinge to the cowl with cleco's
6. If using the doubler, drill and cleco the doubler to the cowl.
7. Remove all components, deburr and clean up the area
8. Treat contact areas of metal with cortec 373 or similar 'mating surface' treatment
9. Rivet in place
10. fit the locking latch of your choice!
We recommend consulting your aircraft inspector prior to installation.
